Back In Port

Hey y’all, I am back from my vacation (it was great! thanks for asking), but I have been knee deep in projects since I got back (hence the lack of updates).

However, the good news is I am working on some stuff that should yield some sweet tutorials once I figure out how to do it myself.

Again, sorry for the lack of goodies. I will be back on it soon.

Freelancer Survey

So our friends at Freelance Switch are running their The First Annual Global Freelancer Survey for 2007.

So if you are a freelancer, check it out. The cool thing is they promise to give the results to all the takers plus you might win a Wii.

T-shirt Friday : I’m Batman

Its been a while since I have done a T-shirt Friday…which is a shame because it is pretty much a direct correlation…if I am not writing T-shirt Friday posts, then I have probably not been perusing any t-shirts. No bueno.

This week is different though. I found this shirt on Threadless, and I think the creativity is great (which is what I think sets Threadless apart from the other companies out there).

It also is good timing because of all the Batman buzz that is flying around (no pun intended). I am as excited about a good batman movie as anyone, but Heath Ledger as the joker? Hmmm…

Course I am biased because I have never been much of a fan…but I digress.

Batman!

Photoshop (and other design tools) expert wanted!

Ok, so a friend of mine mentioned to me some sites that are great resources for Photoshop and told me I should write a post about them on this here blog.

I responded “I don’t have any photoshop articles”.

His response “Why not…your blog is about all things related to UI isn’t it?”

And to that…I had no response, because he is right of course. The idea of this site is to talk about all things related to the user interface, and here I am neglecting a big part of just that topic. Doesn’t make a whole lotta sense does it?

The truth of the matter is, while I can use Photoshop relatively well, I am no master by any means so I don’t really feel qualified to write a lot about it. However, in web design (and really just about any design), the use of design tools such as Photoshop is an important topic.

So I am putting out the call. I am looking to find some guest authors to write an article from time to time on design tools. It doesn’t have to be Photoshop per se, but it has to be something used in the creative process of creating a computer application (i.e. a web page).

Interested? Here are the requirements:

1. Can you write well? I am not looking for Shakespeare here, but ya gotta be able to write something that other people would enjoy reading.

2. Do you know your stuff? Obviously if you are gonna write about PS, or some other tool, then you have to know how to use it.

3. Can you make it applicable? Some design tools…such as PS…are used for a wide variety of reasons. The focus here is creating interfaces for computers. If you are a guru, but you use it to create printed materials, then it might be hard for web designers to relate to.

That’s it…nothin’ fancy.

So if you are interested, please get in touch and we can go from there.

Platform Survey

So I just took a little survey (19 questions) about the various developer platforms that I have used and which I prefer and why.

If you are a developer (either professionally or as a hobbyist) you might want to check it out.

Pure willpower

Will…not…post about iPhone…must…resist.

The pull is strong…but I think…I can resist.

Bah! I failed.

Preparing for TechEd

Man it has been a slow couple of days in the ui world…nothin’ too exciting happening, but that’s cool. Guess even the geeks take Memorial day off eh?

Next week is Microsoft’s TechEd event, and I am happy to be going. I have been building my “session list” and am getting really stoked.

Primarily I will be learning about WPF, Silverlight, and AJAX technologies. A few sessions are going to be on the new “Acropolis” stuff which somehow connects with WPF (I will find out more after I get there), so that should be cool.

I hope to be able to post during the event from time to time, but since this is my first time to go, I am not sure what to expect. If I can’t write much in between sessions, then I will definitely report back my findings as soon as I return.

If there are some technologies or doodads that you would like some specific info on, let me know and I will do my best to bring back all the tasty dev goodness you could possible ask for.

All done!

Server transfer is complete.

Happened a lot faster than I expected. Nice.

Switchin’ Servers

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know that over the weekend I am planning on switching servers for the site. I am ramping up my web development business and with that comes a server upgrade. So if you notice anything funky (hopefully there won’t be), then that is probably the reason.

And the winner is…

I know you are all waiting with baited breath (never understood that little saying…someone sitting around with minnows in their mouths? Weird.) to hear the winner of the Comment Contest.

So without further ado…the winner is…

Jon.

Jon made a very insightful comment about the reboots.

So there you have it! Jon, congratulations, and I hope you nail someone in the face with your USB Rocket Launcher!

Also, I will be running a contest of some sort or another pretty regularly. Just my little way of saying thanks to all the readers and commenters out there.
